In August 2011, we arrived at the conclusion that we needed help managing our databases. At the time, our infrastructure was running entirely on Amazon Web Services (AWS). On the database side, we managed a handful of AWS Relational Database Servers (RDS). The database servers were in both the East and West regions, but we wanted even more redundancy.
As our infrastructure and userbase grew, so did the importance of resilience in our infrastructure. We knew that we could not achieve this without master-master replication between the East and West coasts. We also knew that we are programmers, not DBAs. To build a rock solid solution would require hiring either a DBA or finding a managed solution.
Given the speed of growth we were experiencing and the high level of expectations we had, whatever we chose had to be the best of breed. We considered hiring a DBA, but prefered a fully-managed database provider. Our requirements were straightforward:

Now that we have a year of working with ClearDB under our belt, we can confidently say that we don't know how we lived without them. As our data needs grew, execution of the items above became more and more important. ClearDB has helped us tune our queries a countless number of times. They have discovered and helped troubleshoot issues that we didn't even know we had.
The one support item that really impressed us was ClearDB's technical knowledge at the application level. We knew that they were all over our databases, but we didn't expect them to help optimize our application configuration. This really solidified our appreciation for the role they were playing on our team.
In addition to the level of support and extensive service offerings ClearDB provides, they also support EC2, our primary cloud environment. By keeping our applications and databases in the same EC2 environment, we were able to seamlessly switch to ClearDB without modifying existing security and networking policies.
